Cystoviridae

diagram of Cystovirus

Diagram prepared for ICTVdB by Cornelia Büchen-Osmond

"Cystoviridae are enveloped spherical particles and are 86 nm in diameter. The nucleocapsid is about 58 nm in diameter. the removal of the nucleocapsid surface protein reveals a dodecahedral polymerase complex which is about 43 nm in diameter" (Virus Taxonomy, Sixth Report of the ICTV; 1995). The left hand diagram of Cystovirus is redrawn from the ICTV Report. The right hand 3D reconstruction of Pseudomonas phage f6 is from Dr Sarah J. Butcher at the Division of Virology at Glasgow, UK. "This figure shows a 2f surface view of the nucleocapsid of f6 where the major nucleocapsid protein is coloured white and the proteins of the polymerase complex are shown in orange". From: Butcher, S. J., Dokland, T. D., Ojala, P., Bamford, D. H., and Fuller, S. D. EMBO J. In press. Various assemblies of the enveloped, double stranded RNA virus phi6.
