Members of the families Lipothrixviridae and Rudiviridae have filamentous particles containing linear dsDNA genomes that infect extremely thermophilic Archaea in the kingdom Crenarchaeota. However, members of the family Lipothrixviridae are enveloped while those of the family Rudiviridae are not. Approximately 30% of the ORFs in the Sulfolobus islandicaus rod-shaped virus (SIRV) genomes have homologs in the SIFV genome. Similarly, 20% of AFV-1 genes have homologs in SIRV genomes. There is one ORF in the SIFV genome that shows weak similarity to a conserved ORF in the family Fuselloviridae (a291 in SSV-1) that is important for virus function. One ORF in the AFV-1 genome has significant similarity to ORF-a45 in the SSV-1 genome.
