Analysis of the genome structure, the origin of replication and the Rep proteins of viruses of the genus Circovirus show similarity to members of the plant virus family Nanoviridae and less pronounced similarity to members of the plant virus family Geminiviridae. CAV has features in common with viruses such as Torque Teno virus (TTV) and Torque Teno mini virus (TTMV), which are members of the genus Anellovirus. Members of both genera possess circular ssDNA genomes with similar but not identical negative sense genome organizations. The non-coding regions of CAV, TTV and TTMV are G-C rich and show a low level of nt homology. In addition, CAV, TTV and TTMV specify structural proteins that contain 2 aa motifs with putative roles in RCR and non-structural proteins that exhibit protein phosphatase activity.
Circo: sigla to indicate that the virus genome has a circular conformation Gyro: greek derivation from "gyrus" meaning "ring" or "circuit" to indicate that virus genome has a circular conformation
