Similarity with Other Taxa
Caliciviridae have some properties similar to the viruses in the families Picornaviridae, Potyviridae, and Comoviridae relative to the presence of a VPg at the 5’ end and a poly(A) tract at the 3’end of the positive sense ssRNA genome. The putative viral RdRp of the Caliciviridae shares sequence homology with that of Picornaviridae.
Derivation of Name
Calici: from Latin calix, "cup" or "goblet", from cup-shaped depressions observed by electron microscopy. Lago: from Lagomorpha, the mammalian host order for the type species Rabbit hemorrhagic disease virus. Vesi: from the type species Vesicular exanthema of swine virus.
