8th Reports of the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses

The taxonomic structure of virus orders, families and genera are listed in three different ways to facilitate the search for a particular virus family or genus:

Order, family and genus names are sorted
1. in alphabetical order
2. according to their taxonomic order based on nucleic acid content and strandedness
3. according to their general host range

Throughout this document taxa are listed according to their taxonomic order which is dedermined by phenotypic and genotypic properties. Each type species name is preceded by the name of the order, family and genus it belongs to. Names of orders, families and genera are in italic script, if they are approved by the ICTV. Taxa names in quotes (and not in italic script) indicate that this taxon has not an international ICTV approved name. Species (vernacular) names are since 1999 also given in italic script.
