Virion Properties

Morphology

Virions consist of a capsid. Virus capsid is not enveloped. Capsid/nucleocapsid is elongated with helical symmetry. Virus preparations contain one particle component. The capsid is filamentous, flexuous with a length of 680-900 nm and a width of 11-13 nm. Axial canal is distinct, or indistinct; 2-2.5-3 nm in diameter. Basic helix is obvious, or obscure. Pitch of helix is 3.3-3.38-3.4 nm.

Electron microscopic preparation and references: Virus preparation contains few virions, or many virions.

Physicochemical and Physical Properties

Virions have a buoyant density in CsCl of 1.28-1.32 g cm-3; sucrose of 1.326-1.328-1.33 g cm-3. There are 1 sedimenting component(s) found in purified preparations, or 2 sedimenting component(s) found in purified preparations. The sedimentation coefficient is 140-151.4-180 S20w; of the other(s) are 150-155-160 S20w. Isoelectric point pH is 4.3-4.65-5.3. A260/A280 ratio is 0.77-1.417-2.9. The Mr of the genome constitutes 4-5.466-7% of the virion by weight. The genome is monopartite. Only one particle size of linear, positive-sense, single-stranded RNA is recovered.
