Classification

This is a description of a vertebrate virus at the genus level.

ICTVdB Virus Code: 00.047.0.01. Virus accession number: 047001GE. Obsolete virus code: 47.0.1.; superceded accession number: 47010000.
NCBI Taxon Identifier NCBI Taxonomy ID: 10624.

Name, Synonyms and Lineage

Virus is of the family 00.047. Polyomaviridae.

Virion Properties

Morphology

Virions consist of a capsid. Virus capsid is not enveloped, round with icosahedral symmetry (T=7). The capsid is isometric and has a diameter of 40-45 nm. Capsids appear round. The capsomer arrangement is clearly visible. The capsid consists of 72 capsomers (, each of which is composed of five copies of VP1 in skew arrangement). Surface projections are small and surface appears rough.

Capsids can be penetrated by stain and some appear dark in the center. Incomplete particles are common and morphologically aberrant forms are observed. They are devoid of nucleic acid characterized by capsids with dark centers in negative stain preparations and filamentous or tubular in form as result of aberrant maturation.

Physicochemical and Physical Properties

Virions have a buoyant density in CsCl of 1.34 g cm-3.

Nucleic Acid

The Mr of the genome constitutes 12% of the virion by weight. The genome is not segmented and contains a single molecule of circular; supercoiled, double-stranded DNA ; that forms a covalently closed circle. Minor species of non-genomic nucleic acid are also found in virions. The encapsidated nucleic acid is mainly of genomic origin, but virions may also contain nucleic acid of host origin including fragments of host DNA (in one type of particles). The complete genome is 5000 nucleotides long. The genome has a guanine + cytosine content of 40-50 %.

GenBank records for nucleotide sequences; complete genome sequences.

Proteins

The viral genome encodes structural proteins located in the capsid.

Lipids

Lipids are absent.
